Unmasking the Monsterous
Solo Exhibition by Wade Boswell

On View: July 31 - August 28
Opening Reception: Friday, July 31, 5-8pm

My sculptures unmask monstrous truths and invite us to sit with the shadows inside us, within us, around us.

With the slow patient process of sculpting in clay I am in extended dialogue with each piece. As it emerges from the clay I find myself asking “What is it you want me to know?”

My practice is rooted in my own journey of unmasking deeply buried parts of myself: my queerness, transness, mysticism, and neurodivergence. I give form to the knowing that society deems me as other - as monstrous. I seek not to overcome but to be in relationship with myself more fully.  As such, creating the monstrous has been part of my journey towards reckoning, acceptance, authenticity and joy.

My work can be read both as reflections of the “monstrous” within me as well as the dehumanizing, violent, shaming, greedy oppressive monstrous parts of our society.

What we don’t name has power over us. What we name, we can reconcile, integrate, release, respond to.  When we befriend instead of exile, what we fear loses power over us. The sculptures in this show invite us to turn towards instead of away from the monstrous: to stay present,  witness, feel, and to do the hard work of transforming ourselves and our society.
