Artwork Pricing: Tips

Pricing your artwork can be a daunting task and truthfully...it is very subjective!
However, there are a number of considerations to run through when crafting your prices.

  1. How big is your artwork?
    • Bigger artwork utilizes more materials, but tiny artwork can take a lot of skill and patience.

  2. What type of materials are used to create your work?
    • Are your materials expensive?
    • Image you had to purchase all new materials, brand-new, to create this artwork. How much would you spend on these materials?

  3. How long did this take you to make?
    • If someone offered you an hourly rate to create this artwork, what would you charge?
    • Are these skills, and your speed, backed by years of practice and education? Fasted art doesn't always mean "cheap" it can mean "skilled".

  4. Are there other processes beyond your personal creating that goes into this final product?
    • Do you have to print your photographs in a dark room or get them printed elsewhere?
    • Did you have to frame your artwork?
    • Does your ceramic work get fired?

  5. Does the gallery or community-space you're exhibiting take commission?
    • For example, to exhibit at the Artspace Gallery, we take a 25% commission in order to support the staffing needed to exhibit shows.
    • Absolutely factor this percentage into final prices!

  6. Look at your artwork as a collection, are prices somewhat consistent?
    • When looking at 2 mugs of similar size and skill, are they similar prices?
    • Look at these prices through the eyes of your guests.

  7. At the end of the day, with all things considered, what price would you be comfortable seeing this artwork go for?
    • Are you "pricing to sell"? Meaning, you'd just like a little compensation for your work in order to move it along?
    • If your artwork is near and dear to your heart, but you are open to sell, what would you let it go at?
